History
The origins of London Stansted Airport date back to the year 1943 when it started off as Stansted airfield. This airfield was used both as a bomber airfield and a major maintenance depot in the Second World War under the name RAF Stansted Mountfitchet by the United States Army Air Forces and Royal Air Force.
Later, in the year 1949, the Air Ministry took control of Stansted Airport, after which the airport started serving as a base for many UK airlines.
Then, the British Airways Authority (BAA) gained control of STN, following which many holiday charter airlines started operating from therein.
Thereafter, the year 2013 saw the transfer of ownership of Stansted Airport from BAA to Manchester Airports Group, its current owner, because of a ruling by the Competition Commission against the monopolistic position of BAA in March 2009.
