History

The airport was officially launched on 8th July 1939 as Elmdon Airport. The Duchess of Kent, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark unveiled the airport while Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was accompanying her. It was built at a cost amounting to £360,000. The Birmingham City Council was the owner and operator of the airport.

Thereafter, during the Second World War, the airport was requisitioned by the Air Ministry for use by both the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy under the name RAF Elmdon. The airport was mostly used for flight training and wartime production. Then, on 8th July 1946, the airport was reconfigured for civilian operations, although the Government yet held control of the airport.

In the year 2010, the announcement of the merger between Terminals 1 and 2 into a single facility was made. After the unification, the airport was also renamed from Birmingham International Airport to Birmingham Airport.
