The history of Bournemouth Airport goes back to the year 1941 when it was established as a Royal Air Force (RAF) station, RAF Hurn, during the Second World War. Before that, the site of Bournemouth Airport was known as Christchurch Airfield. However, the airport started operating civil services in the year 1944.

Then, for a short duration between the years 1944 to 1946, the airport was serving as London’s International airport, following which operations were shifted to Heathrow.

Also, the year 1969 marks the joint purchase of the airport by both Dorset County Council and Bournemouth Corporation. Thereafter, the airport came to be known as “Bournemouth Hurn Airport” and then to “Bournemouth International Airport”.

Later on, in the year 1995, the National Express Group acquired the airport. Subsequently, the Manchester Airports Group purchased the Airport in March 2001; then, Regional & City Airports acquired the airport in the year 2017.
