East Midlands Airport (IATA Name: EMA) is situated within the East Midlands of England, next to Castle Donington in Northwestern Leicestershire in England in the United Kingdom. This international airport serves an array of domestic and short-haul European destinations. The domestic network of East Midlands Airport covers Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Rutland, and Leicestershire.

Initially, the airfield was developed to serve as a Royal Air Force station, RAF Castle Donington, in the year 1943. Thereafter, the airport started civil operations in the year 1965.

Over the years, East Midlands Airport has come to be recognized as a center for low-fare airlines, including Ryanair and Jet2.com.
The Manchester Airports Group (MAG) owns and operates East Midlands Airport presently.

History

The year 1943 marks the unveiling of RAF Castle Donington as a Royal Air Force station during the Second World War. However, in the year, this RAF station was decommissioned.

Local government bodies then purchased this former RAF station in the year 1964, paving the way for the rebranding of the airport to East Midlands Airport in the year 1965.

Later, the National Express Group bought the airport from the local councils in the year 1993. Thereafter, Manchester Airports Group took over the airport in February 2001.

The airport was renamed to Nottingham East Midlands Airport during the year 2004 only to be reverted back to its original name – East Midlands Airport – on 8th December 2006.

Since the year 2005, the airport has been extended and revamped to serve more passenger numbers.
