Exeter Airport (IATA Name: EXT) is traced to Clyst Honiton in East Devon nearby to Exeter city in Devon County in South West England. As an international airport, EXT operates chartered and holiday flights across Europe and the United Kingdom.
History
The date 31st May 1937 marks the opening of Exeter Airport after getting clearance from the Air Ministry. Then, on 9th September 1937, the airport was officiated for public use. However, the formal opening of the airport took place on 20th July 1938 by Sir Kingsley Wood, the Air Minister.
The airport was used in the Second World War and it was known as RAF Exeter; it served as an RAF Fighter Command airfield through the Battle of Britain during that time.
Later, it was during the year 1952 when the airport started being used for scheduled services to the Channel Islands, along with Charter flights to various other destinations.
The history of ownership of Exeter Airport is traced back to the year 1958 when the Ministry of Air Defence (Air) purchased the airport from Exeter City Council. Then, on 7th October 1964, Air Holdings took charge of the airport after obtaining a long-term lease from the Air Ministry. Finally, in April 1972, a consortium consisting of 3 councils (including Exeter City Council, Torbay Council, and Devon County Council) purchased the airport.
From 1974 onwards, Devon County Council was the sole owner of Exeter International Airport. More so, Exeter and Devon Airport Limited (EDAL) was managing the airport; EDAL is a wholly-owned limited company owned by Devon County Council.
Moreover, during the early 80s, the airport was revamped to include a new terminal building and a runway extension.
Thereafter, Devon County Council sold the majority of its stake to Regional and City Airports Limited, which is a syndicate headed by a construction company Balfour Beatty, for £60 million on 5th January 2007. Subsequently, the Patriot Aerospace division of Rigby Group purchased the airport on 26th January 2013.
Transportation
Exeter Airport is accessible via road and bus. The A30 dual carriageway and M5 motorway have links to the airport. Exeter Airport does not have a railway station. Cranbrook is the nearest railway station to Exeter Airport. Also, the airport has a bus link to Exeter St David’s railway station.
