Glasgow Prestwick Airport (IATA Code: PIK) is an international airport traced to the northeast side of Prestwick in South Ayrshire in Glasgow in the United Kingdom. Troon, Ardrossan, Kilwinning, Stevenston, Irvine, Kilmarnock, and Prestwick are some urban cluster areas surrounding Ayr that the airport serves. Ryanair operates low-cost scheduled regular and seasonal passenger flights to and from the airport.

The various destinations within the airport network include Malaga, Lanzarote, Alicante, Tenerife, Faro, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Palma, and Murcia.

History
The Duke of Hamilton and David McIntyre are the founders of the airfield. Also, the airfield became an airport in the year 1938 after passenger facilities were added. Additionally, the Royal Air Force used the airport as a military base during the Second World War. However, the airport resumed passenger flights in the year 1946.

Over the years, the airport added a control tower, freight building, terminal building, and loop road. Also, the airport runway was extended for serving the US Air Force – it has been developed as per the US Military specification.
Matthew Hudson, a Canadian entrepreneur, purchased the airport and he constructed the airport’s railway station along the Ayrshire Coast Line. Thereafter, Hudson sold the airport to Stagecoach, a Scottish transport company, in the year 1998.

Later, in the year 2001, Infratil, which is a New Zealand company and a majority stakeholder in Wellington International Airport, became the airport owner.

The Scottish Government purchased the airport on 22nd November 2013 and has been its owner ever since.
