About Heathrow Airport
London Heathrow Airport (LHR), located 14 miles west of Central London, is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the third busiest airport globally in terms of passenger traffic. LHR is also counted among the 6 international airports in the London Airport System; Stansted, Luton, City, Gatwick, and Southend are the 5 others. Heathrow Airport Holdings is the owner of this premier air gateway to the United Kingdom.

Over 90 airlines provide operations from LHR in the United Kingdom. While British Airways uses LHR as its hub, Virgin Atlantic Airways has its primary operating base therein.

LHR serves more than 170 destinations, including Oceania, South America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Also, the LHR, along with its 2 east-west runways running parallelly, has 4 passenger terminals and 1 cargo terminal. Earlier, LHR had 5 terminals but Terminal 1 has not been operational since the year 2015. Terminal 2 of LHR is referred to as “the Queen’s Terminal”.

Heathrow started as a small airfield in the year 1929 and it grew to become a larger airport after World War II in the 1940s. Moreover, LHR started operations under the name London Airport and it was rechristened to Heathrow Airport in the year 1966.
