About Heathrow Airport Terminal 2

The newest terminal of London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is Terminal 2 and its official name is the “Queen’s Terminal”. This terminal was launched on 4th June 2014 and it has 24 gates. Luis Vidal, the renowned Spanish architect, designed this terminal, which has been developed on the site where the Original Terminal 2 and Queens Building earlier stood.

After undergoing 6 months of tests, the main complex of this terminal was completed in November 2013. This terminal has a spacious 1340 car parking space, a cooling station for providing chilled water, and a satellite pier. Also, there are 52 shops and 17 bars and restaurants herein.

It took 6 months for airlines to shift their operations from their original positions to the new Terminal 2. Also, for the first 6 weeks after this terminal was unveiled, only 10% of flights were running operations therein.

The date 4th June 2014 marks the shifting of operations of United Airlines to Terminal 2 from Terminals 1 and 4. Thereafter, Air China, Air Canada, and All Nippon Airways followed suit from Terminal 3. Then, on 22nd October 2014, Asiana Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Air New Zealand, TAP Air Portugal, and South African Airways began operating from Terminal 2.

The majority of the flights from Terminal 2 come from the Northern or Western part of Europe. This terminal is mainly used by airlines having membership of Star Alliance, adhering to the co-location policy of Star Alliance “Move Under One Roof”.

In addition to that, China Airlines, which is a SkyTeam member, and other non-aligned airlines use Terminal 2. Terminal 2 is also counted among the 2 terminals that operate domestic flights across both the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In the year 1955, the original Terminal 2 was launched as the Europa Building and it was hailed as the oldest terminal of LHR. It was spread over 534,470 square feet and equipped to handle about 1.2 million passengers yearly. During its final years, the terminal was accommodating 8 million passengers and it served more than 310 passengers in its lifetime. In the year 2010, the old Terminal 2 was demolished; the Queen’s Building with its numerous airline offices was also brought down alongside.
