Whereas 7 local authorities own 51% share of Newcastle Airport, AMP Capital holds 49% percent stock therein. Copenhagen Airport sold its stake in NCL to AMP Capital in October 2012.

Newcastle Airport: Areas Served
Among the various counties that NCL serves are Cumbria and Northumberland in North East England, County Durham, Tyne & Wear, and the Scottish Borders district of Southern Scotland.

Newcastle Airport: History
The date 26th July 1935 marks the launch of Newcastle Airport in Woolsington by Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister, the Secretary of State for Air. Also, NCL was developed at a cost of £35,000, which included a garage, a hanger, workshops, a clubhouse, and a grass runway. Moreover, the first scheduled flight of NCL was from Croydon town in South London in England to Perth city in Scotland by North Eastern Airways via an 8-seater Airspeed Envoy aircraft.

In the 1940s, the RAF used the airport as an auxiliary wartime base during Second World War and it was handed back in the year 1946.

Later, on 17th February 1967, the new terminal building at the airport was unveiled by Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

In the year 1978, the airport was granted the “Category B” status, becoming a regional International airport for operating short-haul and medium-haul International flights.

In October 2000, Prime Minister Tony Blair officially opened a major Terminal extension to enlarge the size of the Check-In Hall at the airport; the cost of this extension went up to £27 million.

Thereon, in October 2003, the new “Newcastle International Brand” was inaugurated.
