About Norwich Airport

Norwich Airport (IATA Name: NWI), an international airport, operates commercial and charter flights from Norwich. Traced to Hellesdon in Norfolk in England in the United Kingdom, Norwich Airport provides flight operations across Europe and the United Kingdom.

The early 1970s marks the establishment of Norwich Airport over the site of a previous RAF base by local authorities. Later on, the airport was sold to private investors.

History

The origins of Norwich Airport go back to the year 1933; Boulton & Paul used the airfield for aircraft testing and other recreational pursuits during that period. However, the airport was officiated as a Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Station on 1st June 1940. Then, the airport ceased operations on 1st August 1963 and RAF left on 24th March 1967.

The subsequent two years saw Norwich City and Norfolk County Council purchase the airport while the Ministry of Defense retained a small part of the airfield.

Over the years, the county and city councils contributed to the development of the airport. Also, the main airport terminal was unveiled during the year 1988 and the airport was rebranded to Norwich International Airport in the year 1999.

Omniport bought over 80% of Norwich Airport in March 2014 from the city and county councils. Since then, the airport started increasing the number of flights and destinations it serves.

Thereafter, in the year 2014, the majority of Omniport shareholders sold their stakes to the Rigby Airport. Subsequently, the airport was integrated into the Regional & City Airports Group in April 2017.
