History
Sumburgh Airport opened on 3rd June 1936 and its first flight was to Aberdeen. This airport is among the first airfields to be fitted with RDF facilities because of its close proximity to Sumburgh head. The airport was also used by the Royal Air Force under the name RAF Sumburgh during the Second World War

The previous RAF Sumburgh airfield had three runways; and presently, only two of them are in use after being extended.

Sumburgh Airport is unique because of its 550m helicopter runway against the standard helipad.
