  Teesside International Airport

Teesside International Airport (IATA Code: MME) is based midway of Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees in the Northern England part of the United Kingdom. Among areas that the airport serves include the North-Eastern regions (mainly Teesside), North Yorkshire, and County Durham.

History

Teesside International Airport was a Royal Air Force (RAF) station, RAF Middleton St. George or RAF Goosepool, at the time of World War II. Nonetheless, the year 1964 marks the closure of the RAF Station and its takeover by the Ministry of Aviation. Also, the aerodrome came to be known as Tees-Side Airport in the same year.

Subsequently, during the 1960s, the airport started operating scheduled domestic and international flights. And the newly-formed Cleveland and Durham County Councils became shareholders in the airport in the year 1974.

Then, the year 1987 marks the rebranding of the airport to Teesside International Airport after its privatization.

However, the Cleveland and Durham County Councils retained their shares even after the airport privatization.
Then, 1996 saw the Cleveland County Council being abolished and the airport ownership being divided among the local Borough Councils.

Subsequently, Peel Airports Limited bought a 75% stake in the airport in 2002 only to increase its share to 89% after a decade.

The airport was renamed to Tees Valley Airport in the year 2004 before returning to its original name Teesside International Airport on 25th July 2019, after poll findings suggested locals preferred the original airport name.
However, the airport was brought under public ownership on 24th January 2019, after being in the private sector for 16 years.

Currently, Tees Valley Combined Authority and the Teesside Airport Foundation own three-quarters and one-quarter of the airport respectively.
